  1. Stonewall Recognition: A Stepping Stone Towards LGBTQ Inclusivity
Stonewall is a prominent British charitable organisation dedicated to facilitating equal opportunities for individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Every year, Stonewall measures LGBTQ+ equality in the professional arena through its Work Equality Index (WEI). DMU has been recognised by Stonewall as one of the top 100 most inclusive employers in terms of sexual orientation and identity. Besides ensuring LGBTQ+ inclusivity at the grassroot level, DMU also organises a vibrant cultural event called DMUPride, entailing various activities to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues and celebrate their victories. It also undertakes other initiatives, including training sessions for LGBTQ+ allies and trans guidance.
  2. Race Equality Charter (REC)
The Race Equality Charter, a measure of racial diversity devised by the national higher education charity, lists five guiding principles through which universities identify factors restricting students from non-white racial and cultural backgrounds from achieving their highest potentials. REC entails bronze, silver and gold awards for universities based on their racial inclusiveness levels. DMU has managed to secure a bronze award in this category. The university’s Freedom to Achieve (FTA) project aims at closing prevalent gaps between the proportion of white students who secure coveted degrees to that of students from other racial backgrounds. DMU also collaborates with six other UK universities, including University of Hertfordshire and University College London, to determine different strategies to overcome the racial gap in education.
  3. Disability Confident: Ensuring Support for Differently Abled Students
DMU is dedicated to providing considerable support and guidance to students and staff members with physical and mental disabilities. In adherence to the Equality Act proposed in 2010, DMU has facilitated a conducive, sensitive and open environment for all individuals and has been awarded Disability Two Ticks Symbol for its initiatives in recruiting individuals with disabilities. DMU also provides financial aids for students with disabilities, assessments with an educational psychologist and exam guidance, among other forms of assistance.
  4. Athena SWAN: Supporting Women Across Educational Domains
Athena SWAN was established as an initiative to encourage women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine (STEMM) courses, propelling their higher education and research endeavours in these fields. Today, this initiative has expanded to include support for women across arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL).
