Washington State University is a nationally recognized land-grant research university. WSU is well known for its programs in veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, architecture, global animal health, food science, plant science, business, human health, pharmacy, neuroscience, communications, biofuels, sleep, business, education, energy. As well, WSU's athletics teams compete in many recognized regional competitions.
Undergraduate general admission requirements:
Secondary School:
To be considered for admission to Washington State University as a freshman, a student needs to complete at least 12 years of school, culminating in an appropriate secondary certificate or external examination. (We may consider the first year or two of university in some countries to be secondary level.)
Schooling should include preparation in humanities, mathematics, basic sciences, and social sciences.
WSU requires a minimum grade point average of 2.70 (on a 4.00 scale) for admission as an international freshman.
College or University Transfer:
To be admitted to WSU as an international transfer student, you need to complete a minimum of 27 semester credits or at least 1 full year of study at an accredited post-secondary school. WSU requires a minimum grade point average of at least 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for admission as an international transfer student.
Transfer Credit for A-Level Examinations:
Students who have completed GCE A-Level examinations may qualify for transfer credit. We do not grant college credit for AS-level exams. Visit our Cambridge Credit Chart for more detailed information on which exams qualify for A-level transfer credit. In order to receive transfer credit, applicants must have the awarding body send their official A-level Statement of Results to WSU.

English Proficiency:
There are 3 ways to meet the University’s English language proficiency requirement.
- Language Proficiency Exams: WSU accepts scores from the following exams. Score reports can be uploaded into the online international undergraduate admission application at time of submission or emailed or sent by postal mail to our office. Scores must be less than 2 years old.
- TOEFL: Minimum score 79
- IELTS: Minimum score 6.5
- Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency: Minimum score 176
- SAT: Minimum 500 critical reading sub score
- MET: Minimum score 52
- Duolingo, Duolingo English Test: Minimum score 105
- ACT: Minimum score 17 in English, Minimum score 19 in reading
- Cambridge IGCSE/O- Levels: Minimum Grade C or better in English First Language
- Cambridge International AS/A Levels: Minimum Grade C or better in English First Language
- Advanced Placement (AP): 3 or better in Language Composition Exam
- Language Waivers: There are several ways to qualify for a waiver. You will not need to provide an exam score if you meet any of these criteria:
- Waiver Option A: If you have attended a U.S. high school or an international high school that is regionally accredited in the United States for 3 or more years
- Waiver Option B: If you have attended a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, have completed the transferable equivalents of WSU’s English 101 and 102 with a 3.0 grade point average for each course at the time of application, and have 27 semester (40 quarter) transferable credits completed by the beginning of classes for the term you are applying
- Waiver Option C: If you have attended a U.S. regionally accredited college or university and have earned at least 53 semester (80 quarter) hours of transferable credits by the beginning of classes for the term you are applying
- Waiver Option D: If you have attended a U.S. regionally accredited college or university and have completed an Associate of Arts or Associate of Sciences degree from the college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.5 by the beginning of classes for the term you are applying
- Waiver Option E: If you are a citizen of Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Overseas Territories, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Canada, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Montserrat, Nigeria, New Zealand, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom & Northern Ireland, Zambia, Zimbabwe (provide proof of citizenship to have waiver applied)
- Waiver Option F: You were schooled outside the United States at a school where the language of instruction was English (provide an official letter from the school stating English was the language of instruction while you attended)
- Learning English at WSU: There are 2 options to improve your English – choose the location and program that is best for you. The Intensive American Language Center in Pullman offers English as a Second Language courses and International Master’s and undergraduate Foundation programs that prepare international students for study at the University by allowing students to complete non-degree coursework along with Academic English.
Graduate general admissions requirements:
- Prospective international students must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an approved institution. Usually this is a minimum of four years of study beyond grade 12.
- A grade point average equivalent to a U.S. grade of “B” or better is required.
- Applicant must have official TOEFL, IELTS, or MET scores submitted directly to the Graduate School (school code 4705) from the testing services. Check English proficiency requirements for specific test score requirements and exceptions to this requirement.
- GRE (school code 4705) or GMAT scores if required by the prospective department.
- Three letters of recommendation generated through the online application. Applicant must be accepted by the department or program in which prospective students seek a degree or graduate study. Any additional requirements set forth by the department or program are also required.
- Transcripts are required for the application review process. A copy of the unofficial transcript (native language and its English translation) for every college and university that the applicant attended is acceptable for the application review process. Applicants may upload copies of unofficial transcripts and translations via the online application. All transcripts sent to the Graduate School as part of the application process become part of the official Graduate School application file and cannot be returned or transferred.
English Proficiency Requirements:
All international applicants must demonstrate a basic proficiency in English by submitting official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Michigan English Test (MET) scores. Scores must be less than two years old at the time of expected semester enrollment and sent directly to the Graduate School from the Educational Testing Service. The Educational Testing Service reporting code for Washington State University is 4705 (for the TOEFL only). Please note exceptions to the English proficiency requirement:
- Applicants from Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Canada, Guyana, Kenya, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, and Trinidad and Tobago are exempt from the English proficiency requirement.
- International students who have or will have graduated with a baccalaureate -level or higher degree from an accredited four-year U.S., Canadian, or United Kingdom college or university within two years of the expected semester of enrollment at the WSU Graduate School are not required to submit English proficiency test scores.
