    University of LeedsRequirements

Established in 1904, the University of Leeds is one of the largest universities in the UK. We’re part of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and are renowned globally for the quality of our research and teaching.

    Our mission:

Through collaboration, we harness our expertise in research and education to advance knowledge, transform lives and shape a better future for our communities, our region and the world.

    Our vision:

Working with others, we will use our collective talents, expertise and shared endeavour in research and education to address local and global challenges, achieve social justice, reduce inequalities, and help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We will enable our students to thrive through a sense of belonging. They will be partners in shaping their own dynamic and innovative educational experience, characterised by active learning, digital technologies and collaboration. Students will feel valued for their unique contribution, and they will graduate equipped to make a difference as true global citizens.

    Our values:

    • Collaboration: We work together to achieve our goals and ambitions.
    • Compassion: We are caring and considerate in our words and actions.
    • Inclusivity: We are a community where everyone is welcome and belongs.
    • Integrity: We are open and honest in our words and actions.

    Facts and figures:

    • We’re ranked in the top 75 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2024)
    • Our staff have been awarded 29 National Teaching Fellowships
    • More than 39,800 students are currently studying here
    • We contribute £1.3 billion every year to the UK economy
    • We’ve won the Queen’s Anniversary prize three times
    • Commendation for our enhancement of student learning opportunities (Quality Assurance Agency)

    Strategies:

Our academic strategy for the next 10 years is rooted in our desire to make a difference in the world.

It sets a blueprint for a values-driven university. One that harnesses expertise in research and education to help shape a better future for humanity, working through collaboration to tackle inequalities, benefit society and drive change.

The academic strategy will be supported by our Enabling Strategy. This will encompass academic areas, our people and ways of working, working conditions and environment, our role in the city and region, financial and environmental sustainability.

    Improving access to education:

For the sons of local families, the Yorkshire College of Science was one of the first colleges for students of all faiths and backgrounds.

The College supported the values of the recently established University College London and Owens College in Manchester. These colleges had been set up to challenge the exclusivity of Oxford and Cambridge universities, which were predominantly for the Anglican aristocracy and gentry. By contrast, this new generation of learning institutions welcomed students from all religions, including dissenters, Catholics, Jews and agnostics.
